Chelsea Supporters 2 - Liverpool Supporters 1, 26 Apr 08

In the climax to a pulsating day’s football for Blues in North America, Chelsea Supporters Club Vancouver beat their Liverpool counterparts 2-1 in an inaugural friendly at Eric Hamber School on April 26. This capped the best performance seen in months by the first team at the Bridge, who also saw off some other northern Reds 2-1 to open up the title race.

After falling behind to an early goal (which included a bizarre and clearly rehearsed celebration that resembled a flailing whale by those cheeky Scallies), our lads rallied, equalised through an own goal (ho ho) and then clinched a thoroughly merited victory with a fine header from a set piece.

The team was slightly apprehensive in the run-up to kick-off. The sidelines were a sea of red shirts, and our opposition had had three training sessions to prepare. This in stark contrast to the Blue huddle just before the start where people were asked where they liked playing, and an unseemly scramble away from the goalkeeper’s shirt that was resolved by Alistair stepping up to do the first-half glove work.

Those doubts lingered in the early exchanges, and the Liver Birds capitalized when their best player on the night hooked in a right-foot volley. However, the Blues settled and then started to create several good chances. Then an inswinging corner caused havoc in the Red six-yard box, and one of the defenders scythed the ball into his own net. Gerry reminded the Scouse contingent on the sidelines that away goals count double. As this is a family website, we cannot print the reply.
