Chelsea Vancouver 4 Liverpool Vancouver 0. Match report and photos

29Jul17 CFC LFC

Match report from Mat Loup and photos by John May.

Vancouver is blue. After two successive defeats, including a particularly heavy beating in 2016, the Chelsea blue flag was raised once more at Trillium as CFC Vancouver defeated LFC Vancouver 4-0.

Now in its 10th year, the annual fixture always has a surprise factor. The Red scallywags have a settled league team, which is evident in the way they go through the gears and know where to find each other on the pitch. For the Blues, we never field anything like the same team, so there is usually a long getting-to-know you period at the start of a game.

Usually. This time around, Coach Gerry could field a strong and relatively young side that tore into Liverpool from the start. Within five minutes, Chelsea were two goals up and the Reds reeling. First Parham forced the ball home from a poorly cleared corner, then Jevin cut in from the left, beat two players then fired into the top right corner.

The normally chirpy Liverpool side were momentarily stunned. Even the banter stopped for a while. Within 15 minutes, it was 3-0. Jevin picked up the ball in his own half, slalomed through four increasingly desperate challenges before shooting across the keeper from outside the box for a beautiful goal.

Unfortunately, things turned a little niggly for a while. Both Gerry and his Liverpool counterpart Andrew McFee had to remind everyone that it was a friendly, and if we wanted to keep playing every year, it needed to be played in that spirit.

But that was the storm, then came the calm. For most of the rest of the game, Gerry rotated his players to keep things fresh (we had a deep bench to call on). The defence, superbly marshalled by Lee Tregonning, Kevin and Lee Empey, rarely had its feathers ruffled, and credit, too, to Max for doing an excellent and often thankless job screening in front of the them.

The fourth goal was the icing on a fine cake right at the end: Lee Tregonning lost his marker at a corner to smash a left foot volley into the roof of the net.
Hopefully next year we can retain a large core from this group, as the standard of this year’s game was good and it was great to see some younger faces coming through.

Good luck to the boys in blue at the Donnelly tournament next Saturday!

Well Done You Vancouver Blues, and many thanks to Mat Loup and John May.

CHAMPIONS!

What a lovely day we had on Friday.

A packed New Oxford was bouncing for the Champions.

It is all the sweeter after last season's "sabbatical" when we allowed Leicester to look after our trophy for a year.

It looked for a while like our coronation might be delayed a few days, but in the end our boys made it a Blue Day.

Please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. any photos and links to videos you took at the pub and we'll put them on Website.

We can relax and enjoy the end of the season before we face Arsenal in our quest for the double.

Join us at The New Oxford – "our house in the middle of Homer Street" – for the remaining Premier League games in what we hope will be a lovely send-off for John Terry.

Happy days!

C'mon You Blues!
