Match report from Mat Loup,. Saturday July 28, 2018
The annual game against our Liverpool counterparts could not have been closer. With the shootout delicately poised, a weak spot kick and a simple kick save by Paul was all it took for the cup to be retained by the Blues.
The weather was hot, and that took any creative tension from the game, which was played in an excellent spirit by both teams. The only goals in the game were both penalties. The first, expertly converted by Jevin, and the equalizer 10 minutes later after a handball. Goalmouth action at either end was sporadic, partly due to the heat and also due to the excellence of Liverpool's back four.
Both sides had their moments. Jevin crashed a shot off the crossbar from near the halfway line, while the Reds' playmaker Adam fizzed one just past the upright.
A draw after 90 minutes was fair. Penalties are always a cruel lottery.
Thanks for the report Mat and for all the organization.
There only thing I would add was that our penalty was given after a move of the match counter-attack - "Sarriball" style - started by Leroy's block of their free-kick, ending in a desperate foul to halt our full back Neil Lloyd, who somehow made it to the Liverpool penalty area and was closing in on goal, possibly for his first time in at least the last 5 years. Great stuff! Well done boys.
