Well, they say it ain’t over till the fat Liver bird has sung... but that was a job well done today. Many thanks and credit to all that played today.
Great team performance by everyone – and especially nice to have a deep pool of players so lots of subbing made Guus’s, I mean Gerry’s, job of organizing the team much simpler. Ben was definitely man of the match – towering header for the first goal, and although his second took a wicked deflection, it was still well deserved.
For those who missed it - frankly, we bossed the game except for a crazy 10 minute spell at the end of the first half when the Scousers could easily have scored twice, much against the balance of overall play. Indeed, we were indebted to Jeffrey’s great recovery goal-line clearance to keep the score at 0-0 at half-time.
Second half, once Ben’s header from Chris’s pinpoint corner went in, the cracks started to appear in the Liverpool lines. Matt C then scored an even better header from a corner to make it 2-0, but then a tiny bit of complacency set in which allowed Liverpool hope and back in the game with a goal. Ben’s second snuffed it out, then two goals on the breakaway, with neat combinations by Chris, Nima and two finishing touches from Imran put paid to that idea.
Game 2 is July 9, (high) noon kickoff at Point Grey secondary school on Arbutus/37th. Will, Nima and Jose have already said they can’t make it, so we’re looking to plug those big gaps already with some others on this list. We surely don’t want to cough up a four-goal lead...! Gerry has said we can head for the Cheshire Cheese opposite for a pint and a burger afterwards. Some of the Liverpool boys might well join us.
