Angus Wakefield’s Liverpool Report
I imagine that the sense of trepidation felt in the build up to this match was commonly shared by many other Chelsea fans around the world. With an attacking threat that would trouble any defence, let alone a youthful one that has been exposed a number of times so far this season, we could be forgiven for fearing the worst. The return of Mount, Emerson and Kante was much welcome news as we would be needing our strongest squad to compete with a team who are so far unbeaten this season.
Liverpool pressed from the start and a Christensen foul on the edge of the penalty area inside 15 minutes gave free-kick specialist Trent Alexander-Arnold an opportunity to put the away side ahead, which he took well. Chelsea’s response was positive and looked to have equalised when Tammy Abraham found himself one-on-one with Adrian, only to be denied by Liverpool’s stand in keeper. In truth, he should have scored, especially given his track record so far this season.
Minutes later, the ball was in the net for Chelsea after a frantic goal-mouth scramble which ended with Azpilicueta poking it home to the roars of relief from both at The Bridge and inside The Oxford. The celebrations were short lived however, when the referee was informed by VAR that Mason Mount’s big toe was offside in the build up, and the goal was cruelly taken away. Still reeling from the decision, Firmino took advantage of some poor man marking from Marcos Alonso, when he headered in from a corner and doubled Liverpool’s advantage. Our luck went from bad to worse when Christensen and Tomori collided to leave the young Dane unable to carry on.
It could have been 3-0 right after the break if not for a wonderful save from Kepa to deny Firmino and Chelsea could easily have downed their tools in the second half. To their enormous credit, however, they fought hard and were rewarded with a fantastic goal by Kante who, in his more advanced position, found himself on a mazy run into the Liverpool defence and fired precisely into the top corner. The last 15 minutes were exciting and we were on the front foot, pressing hard for the equaliser. The final whistle couldn’t come soon enough for Liverpool, and even in defeat we were cheered off the pitch by a raucous Stamford Bridge; a crowd who had seen that, against one of the world’s most in form sides, we were fighting until the end and playing our hearts out for a legendary player-turned-manager. It’s more than can be said for Man Utd…
