Angus Wakefield’s Report on our last match.
A debut for Canadian born Fikayo Tomori meant that Chelsea’s team against Sheffield Utd was the youngest in our Premier League history, showing once again that Super Frank isn’t afraid to make big calls this season. Tammy Abraham was rewarded with another start thanks to his fantastic performance at Norwich, with the bulk of the team retaining their places while notable absentees recover from their respective injuries.

The opening 15 minutes were far less frantic than those we have seen over our last few games, with the only chances coming from a couple of long balls towards Tammy Abraham, who did well to control them but was crowded out by a robust Sheffield defence. Barkley and Jorginho were guilty of a few misplaced passes, but worked hard to win possession back and we were rewarded for our patient start to the game with another Abraham goal, his third of the season. After some wonderful build up play through Barkley and Pulusic, a cross from the right was delivered well by Azpiliqueta and although Abraham’s first effort was saved, Pulusic did enough to spook the goalkeeper into fumbling the ball which Tammy was on hand to fire in.

Kovacic was impressive again throughout and nearly got a goal of his own, as did Mount who had a quieter game by the high standards he has already set himself this season. Both Chelsea and Tammy’s second goal came just before half time as he took advantage of some confusion in the Sheffield defence and kept his concentration to double our lead and grab his fourth of the campaign.

If the first half was a more calmer affair, then the second was another reminder of work that still needs to be done. Having barely left the dressing room, Shefflied carved open our defence with a simple goal to bring them back into the game and set up another tense and chaotic 45 minutes. While Sheffield grew into the game, we were getting the basics wrong- misplacing passes and looking shaky when playing out from the back. Abraham had a great chance to seal the game and take the match ball home after an improvised cross from Azpilicueta, only to be denied by a wonderful save. At 2-1, Frank decided to introduce 18 year old Billy Gilmoure for his senior debut and, while it is always great to see more of our youth come through, perhaps there is a tactical question to be asked when it felt like we were chasing the game and needed to grind out the result. A fantastic sliding block from Tomori in the 88th minute looked to have done just that, but our efforts were in vain when, in stoppage time, the slightest of deflections from Zouma took a cross into the net and gave Sheffield the point they worked so hard for. A familiar feeling of frustration after the final whistle, but we must keep the faith and allow both Frank and this team to find their feet. Next up is the international break, a time which will give us the opportunity to work on tightening our defence, before we face a struggling Wolves side away from home. Lets KTBFFH!

Here’s a fan’s view on last weeks match - thanks to Angus Wakefield for providing his views.

Sunday’s game against Leicester, our first at home this season, became rather uncomfortable in the second half after an explosive opening 20 minutes which could have easily led to 3 goals from The Blues and the game put to bed. There were no initial signs of fatigue from our midweek Super Cup game as we pressed high from the first whistle, roared on by a jubilant Stamford Bridge who were singing the name of our manager throughout, something we will need to maintain during this season of uncertainty.

What an occasion for Mason Mount, who was a positive influence all over the pitch and got the goal his performance deserved after robbing Ndidi outside of the penalty box and producing a wonderful finish off balance. His energy when venturing forward and tracking back was exciting to watch and he is showing why he fully deserves to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

The goal seemed to shock Leicester, who never really got going in the first half and were stunted by a more confident looking pair in Zouma and Christensen, with the former making a number of important interceptions and composed passes from the back. Giroud, handed a rare start, was perhaps showing Abraham a bit more of what we need from a number 9 with his intelligent hold up play and trickery, the highlight being a controlled chest down for a Pedro volley in the first minute of the game.

As a team we tracked back well throughout the game, but questions still remain over our defensive organization. Azpilicueta lost the ball too many times, and his usually fantastic delivery was off the pace. He was caught out for Ndidi's simple header that dragged Leicester back into the game and gave them the confidence to drive forward and finish the game as the stronger side. Pulusic had a quiet game, and his replacement Willian looked off the pace after coming back from injury. We will need to rely on our experienced players more than ever this season, so let’s hope Super Frank’s been working hard on his man-management skills!

Our next game is against Norwich, and our defence is sure to be tested by new signing Teemu Puuki who already has four goals this season. If we can shore up our defensive line and work on our consistency, I feel we have enough attacking prowess to cause them some real problems and get our first win of the season.
